About Coach

A little bit about me.

I grew up in a little town called Muleshoe, in the panhandle of west Texas. Actually, I didn’t really grow up in Muleshoe, but on my parents’ farm 13 miles outside of Muleshoe. (And for that matter, I guess I grew up mostly in the house that was at the farm – if we’re getting technical.) There wasn’t much to do in Muleshoe. I started piano lessons in the first grade, and never stopped. With few distractions, I practiced a lot. I was pretty good.

I eventually went to Baylor University in Waco, Texas. I earned my Bachelor and Master of Music degrees there in piano performance. After 18 years of school and piano lessons, I struck out on my own. I moved to New Jersey, and as luck would have it, ended up teaching class piano at Montclair State University. I enjoyed it. A lot. Enough to want to make a career out of it.

I decided to pursue a Ph.D. in Music Education with an emphasis in Piano Pedagogy at the University of Oklahoma. After finishing the course work, I took a job at Iowa State University teaching the secondary piano requirements. Iowa is very cold in the winter. That helped me finish my dissertation. It was warm in my office.

My wife and I moved to Georgia to be closer to family. I have been teaching Class Piano and Theory at Reinhardt University for the last two years.

My other interests include fly-fishing, urban food forest gardening, politics, and Candy Crush Saga.
